In 2019, there were 12.15 million car accidents in the USA. The number of car accidents per one million Americans is around 7.100. The number of fatal car accidents in 2019 was 36, 096.
So, the point is, when you hear a story about an accident, maybe a fatal one, involving a self-driving car, remember that the only accurate way to gauge the overall safety of self-driving cars is to compare it to human driven cars. We suck at driving, compared to the AIs that operate self-driving cars. Besides which, this is a brand new and profoundly complex technology, I would expect there to be accidents and tragedies in the beginning.
