Kent Waldrep, Athlete Whose Injury Led to Advocacy, Dies at 67

In 1982, together with his renown rising in incapacity circles for having traveled to the Soviet Union and returning residence to Texas to start out the short-lived Worldwide Spinal Twine Analysis Basis, he was appointed to the Nationwide Council on the Handicapped by President Ronald Reagan. Mr. Waldrep ultimately turned vice chairman of the council, a federal company that assesses legal guidelines and applications affecting the disabled. (It was renamed the Nationwide Council on Incapacity in 1988.)

Robert L. Burgdorf Jr., a incapacity rights scholar who was the council’s lawyer, recalled Mr. Waldrep’s assist in reviewing and suggesting adjustments within the draft of what turned the Individuals With Disabilities Act of 1990. He mentioned in an electronic mail that it was Mr. Waldrep who named the laws in a 1985 memo wherein he advised that “all new laws be packaged beneath one title akin to ‘The Individuals with Disabilities Act of 1986.’”

“On this manner,” Mr. Waldrep wrote, “I really feel that the beneficial legislative adjustments may be marketed rather more successfully.”

Alvis Kent Waldrep Jr. was born on March 2, 1954, in Austin, Texas. His father was a banker. His mom was a homemaker who later labored at an airplane restore station owned by her husband.

Kent was an all-district and all-county operating again in highschool in Alvin, Texas, and acquired a scholarship from T.C.U. He was a reserve in 1973, and whereas he had began the primary recreation of the 1974 season, he had simply recovered from a bruised sternum earlier than the Horned Frogs traveled to Birmingham to play Alabama.

It was endowed with greater than $10 million raised by Mr. Waldrep’s basis, primarily from an annual black tie dinner.
