Elon Musk Warns That Russia Might Target Starlink Dishes in Ukraine

Will the Russian army attempt to bomb Starlink dishes in Ukraine? SpaceX CEO Elon Musk is sounding the alarm about the opportunity of an assault on his firm’s gear.

“Necessary warning: Starlink is the one non-Russian communications system nonetheless working in some components of Ukraine, so chance of being focused is excessive. Please use with warning,” Musk tweeted right this moment.

Musk’s warning comes days after SpaceX delivered a cargo of Starlink dishes to the Ukrainian authorities to assist guarantee it may keep web entry whereas dealing with the Russian invasion. Ukrainian Vice Prime Minister Mykhailo Fedorov tweeted a photograph to Musk, exhibiting a Starlink dish put in on a constructing’s roof, making it a visual goal. 

It’s also clear SpaceX delivered the Starlink dishes to Ukrainian authorities. So any visible Starlink dishes could be interpreted as a sign government officials are nearby using them. 

A Twitter user asked Musk how Ukrainians might deploy a Starlink dish “with caution.” In response, Musk said: “Turn on Starlink only when needed and place antenna…as far away from people as possible.” 

“Place light camouflage over antenna to avoid visual detection,” he added. This could include using spray paint, so long as it doesn’t contain metal particles. 

SpaceX’s Starlink works by using orbiting satellites to beam high-speed internet to users on Earth. Hence, it’s become a valuable service to supply broadband during emergencies when fiber networks are disrupted or destroyed. However to obtain the web from the orbiting satellites, Starlink requires the usage of a dish, which must be positioned outdoors with a transparent view of the sky.  

Fedorov indicated that the Russian army has been utilizing warmth signatures by way of “infrared” to focus on Ukraine’s infrastructure. “We want turbines to maintain Starlinks and life-saving providers on-line — concepts?” Fedorov requested Musk on Twitter. 

In response, SpaceX’s CEO is recommending the Ukrainian authorities use the Starlink dishes with photo voltaic panels and battery packs to chop down on any generated warmth.
