It’s not clear from the article. The way I understand it is that vaccine can mean “trains your body to deal with x”.
For example you can get a rabies vaccine after being infected and it is effective as long as there aren’t any symptoms yet.
In this case and it being mrna I suspect that this works similar to the covid vaccine. In wich case it could teach your body to deal with herpes for good.
Also, just to say, I’m very excited about this tech. I’ve been following it for years and I think mrna and us got really lucky with the timing during covid. In that it was ready and covid proved such a strong case for mrna.
Normally its really tedious to test vaccines, but during a pandemic you have lots of infected, so you quickly see how well it works, even for larger numbers.
Also herpes might just be the beginning… Fingers crossed
