NEW YORK (Reuters) – U.S. sunscreen-maker Edgewell Private Care (NYSE:) will look to ink new two- to three-year contracts for chemical substances from China because it anticipates “significant” tariff hikes if President-elect Donald Trump delivers on his marketing campaign pledge, Chief Working Officer Dan Sullivan instructed Reuters on Thursday.

Shelton, Connecticut-based Edgewell, together with its rivals, has a “China dependency” on the chemical substances for its sunscreens, Sullivan stated, explaining there isn’t a regular, alternate provide.

The strikes, which Sullivan stated are frequent methods for procurement groups, are aimed toward limiting the will increase in prices Edgewell would face if Trump imposes larger tariffs on the chemical substances and different items from China.

The corporate’s sunscreen manufacturers embody Banana Boat and Hawaiian Tropic, offered at retailers like Walmart (NYSE:) and Goal (NYSE:). Rival sunscreens embody Kenvue (NYSE:)’s Neutrogena.

Trump has pledged that he would put a 60% tariff on items imported from China, resurrecting his insurance policies from his final time period. There’s already a 25% tariff on the chemical substances for sunscreen, Sullivan stated.

“A tariff improve is a tariff improve. If it’s going to go from 25% to 60%, that’s significant,” he stated. “The solar chemical dialog actually comes all the way down to the fact there are not any various sources for the product, a minimum of not scalable, credible ones. This isn’t like shopping for pulp or aluminum, it is a extremely engineered chemical.

“While you’re coping with a class that doesn’t have various sourcing, you are going to be tremendous artistic and considerate on it,” he added. “It’s one thing they’re engaged on now.”

Edgewell’s procurement workforce would look to barter individually with distributors in China and search new contracts that lock up a two- to three-year provide of chemical substances, since they can not discover dependable alternate sources, Sullivan stated.

To offset the price of prior tariffs, Edgewell elevated costs on its sunscreens for 2 summer season seasons within the mid-single digits, Sullivan stated. An 8-ounce bottle of Banana Boat SPF 50 sunscreen on Walmart.com prices $8.97.

The patron-products maker additionally minimize prices, a technique it will lean on once more if Trump’s new tariffs come to move, Sullivan stated.

Inflation on the sunscreen chemical substances has additionally fallen, with Edgewell anticipating a low-single digit rise in prices going ahead, down from round 30% throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, he stated.

U.S. shoppers have pulled again on spending after once-in-a-generation ranges of inflation the previous a number of years.

“You need to be considerate across the state of the buyer and the warning we see proper now with the buyer,” he stated.

In Trump’s first presidency, Edgewell acquired an exemption from tariffs on metal utilized in its razor blades, Reuters reported on the time.
