Nicaragua expels international Red Cross representative

The federal government of Nicaragua has expelled the consultant of the Worldwide Committee of the Pink Cross

MEXICO CITY — The federal government of Nicaragua has expelled the consultant of the Worldwide Pink Cross Committee, a neighborhood Pink Cross spokeswoman stated Thursday.

Spokeswoman María Cristina Rivera stated the group had obtained a letter from the federal government of President Daniel Ortega ordering ICRC consultant Thomas Ess in a foreign country.

The spokeswoman stated the explanation behind the choice was not clear, and no authorities company would affirm the expulsion.

The Pink Cross stated it will proceed its humanitarian work in Nicaragua. Pink Cross personnel had visited demonstrators imprisoned following 2018 protests in opposition to the federal government.

In a press release, the Affiliation of Family of Political Prisoners referred to as the expulsion “a brand new violation of human rights.”

Since mid-2021 Ortega’s authorities has arrested dozens of opposition figures and sentenced many to jail phrases.

Earlier this month, the Ortega authorities ordered the expulsion of the papal nuncio, Polish Msgr. Waldemar Stanislaw Sommertag.

The church stated in a press release on the time that Nicaragua’s motion was “grave and unjustified.”

The Nuncio had functioned as a proper witness throughout authorities talks with the opposition.
