How Many ‘Wake-Up Calls’ Will it Take for US to Counter China Cyberattacks?

state-sponsored hackers from China had breached its programs in a “main incident.” The hackers compromised a third-party cybersecurity supplier to entry networks of the Workplace of the Treasury Secretary and the Workplace of International Belongings Management (OFAC) — the division entity that offers with financial sanctions. Treasury mentioned the hackers accessed unclassified paperwork.

The hack is the most recent in a sequence of sobering reminders of the cyber risk emanating from China – a risk manifested most profoundly within the so-called “Volt Storm” and “Salt Storm” assaults, which within the final two years have breached U.S. important infrastructure and uncovered vulnerabilities in areas from the water provide to the electrical grid to telecommunications. Within the case of the Salt Storm assaults, the breach compromised main U.S. telecommunications corporations and went unnoticed till Microsoft alerted the federal government.
