So President Xi was willing to destroy Hong Kong as an economic engine, in order to assert political control and destroy liberal democracy there as a competing political vision for the Chinese people.
We can only assume that he will be willing to pay the same high price in order to assert control over Taiwan, and to root out any “Western-style” democracy in place there.
Hong Kong and Taiwan are threats to China, because Xi cannot allow an alternative, competing political vision for the Chinese people to exist outside the CCP. And he is willing to jail and kill people, and destroy whole economies, for that goal . . . .
