Theoretically, it is unlawful for the president to simply accept or solicit bribes. The plain language of the statute is completely clear: It’s a crime for a public official to hunt or obtain "something of worth" in return for "being influenced within the efficiency of any official act." The prohibition applies whether or not the general public official seeks or receives the bribe personally or on behalf of "another particular person or entity."
