Pakistan’s army says militants have ambushed troops in a former Taliban stronghold within the northwest
PESHAWAR, Pakistan — Militants ambushed Pakistani troops in a former Taliban stronghold within the northwest, triggering an intense shootout through which two officers and two insurgents had been killed, the army stated Tuesday.
The Pakistani Taliban claimed duty for the assault in a press release.
The pre-dawn gunbattle occurred in South Waziristan, a district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, in response to a army assertion. It stated the slain insurgents had been concerned in a number of previous assaults on safety forces.
The army stated the officers killed had been a military main and a junior officer. It supplied no additional particulars.
The Pakistani Taliban are often known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan and are a separate group from the Taliban in neighboring Afghanistan, who took over that nation in August. Since then, the TTP has stepped up assaults on safety forces within the area and elsewhere.
